Yesterdays: Man survives Sun Road avalanche

Glacier Park plows were about 2 miles from Logan Pass on the west side and were working on the Big Drift on the east side. The first alumina had arrived at the Anaconda Aluminum Co. plant. Alumina is the raw material to make aluminum.

Editor Mel Ruder made the front page of the New York Herald after winning the Pulitzer Prize for general reporting. The newspaper noted his “daring and resourceful coverage (of the June 8-9, flood in 1964.”

Dennis Holden was walking on the Going-to-the-Sun Road near Road Camp when an avalanche struck him, buried him four times and swept him down the mountain 300 feet. He survived, however, as the road crew lowered a rope down to him and hauled him up the slide.

The old Western Building Center building, which was constructed by Pat Kelly after World War II , was torn down and burned to make way for a new store on Highway 2. Glacier Park celebrated its 75th anniversary and cut the ribbon on a new science center at park headquarters.

After the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, sent a bomb to a forest organization official in California, Plum Creek officials in Columbia Falls were especially cautious when an odd package arrived in Columbia Falls. It turned out to be legitimate.

Glacier Park plow operator Shawn Bessinger took ride in his bulldozer off the Going-to-the-Sun Road. He went down the slope in the dozer about 75 feet at Rimrocks, but was uninjured. The dozer did not tip over.

Columbia Falls boys basketball coach Cary Finberg announced his retirement as the boys coach. He had coached the squad since 1997. He would continue to coach the girls team for several years after that. He won five state A titles as the boys coach.
