June 10, 1955
Bill Sands of Summit caught a 16-pound, 32-inch long cutthroat trout from Red Eagle Lake in Glacier National Park. He caught it from a rubber boat. It was the biggest cutthroat trout ever caught in Glacier and remains a state record today.

The Anaconda Aluminum Co.’s third potline was set to go online. It was part of an expansion of the Columbia Falls plant. A fourth potline was planned and was expected to go online in 1968.

Glacier National Park was asking for a tract of private land in its boundaries at Kelly Camp along Lake McDonald be condemned and taken by the federal government. The owner of the land, James P. Duncan had planned a 40-foot tall, year-round home on the site and the Park Service had grave objections due to the large size of the structure.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road was washed out by flooding and the North Fork of the Flathead saw worse flooding than in ‘64 people said, as cabins and other structures near the river were flooded or washed away.

The fine for illegally killing a grizzly bear in Montana was hiked to $8,000 under a new state law. The previous fine was $2,000, which was seen as too lenient according to some bear advocates at the time.

Glacier National Park rangers caught and killed a black bear in the park that killed and ate a private landowner’s shih-tzu dog that was on their porch. The bear grabbed the small dog and hauled it into the woods and ate it. Park rangers later nabbed the bear in a trap and it was put down.
