Yesterdays: Bear grabs watermelon out of car in Glacier Park and runs off into the woods with it

Contractors were starting to close in potline No. 1 at the new Anaconda Aluminum Co. plant. Each potline was about 100,000 square feet. A bear in Glacier National Park stole a watermelon from the back seat of a convertible car and dashed into the woods with it.

The Bureau of Public Roads had plans to replace the “county half” of the Polebridge over the North Fork. The west half of the bridge was heavily damaged in the June floods. The east half was less damaged and would be repaired by the Park Service.

The film “Winterhawk” was shot in the Flathead Valley. The latest shoot was near the Echo Lake store with the Swan Range in the background. In 1975 famous critic Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four. ““Winterhawk’ is a traditional Western, simply and well told, almost old-fashioned in the clarity of its narrative,” Ebert wrote.

Glacier National Park was building an overlook at Hidden Lake out of wood. The hope was that it would reduce trampling at the iconic site above Logan Pass.

A helicopter removed the remains of a pickup truck that tumbled 1,200 feet off the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park in an accident where everyone survived. They were all ejected from the pickup truck (one jumped) and after they recovered, the family, whose last name was “Finney” were nicknamed the “Flying Finneys” by hospital staff. The truck ended up at the base of Haystack Butte.

Beau Weiher, 22, of Missoula was killed while attempting to BASE Jump off the north face of Mount Siyeh in Glacier National Park. BASE jumpers use a parachute to jump off cliffs and other faces. It is illegal in Glacier.
