Weather stymies Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road plowing efforts

| May 3, 2024 11:55 AM

Bad weather stymied Glacier National Park plowing efforts over the past week. Crews made it to the first pullout at Rim Rocks, but blowing and drifting snow stopped the plowing effort for a couple of days on both sides of the divide.

Rim Rocks is about 0.8 of a mile from Logan Pass. On the east side crews are working in the Siyeh Bend area and will work toward No Stump next week. Crews will also be doing ditch work and other maintenance from Lake McDonald Lodge to Avalanche next week.

The snow depths at Rim Rocks are about 20 feet and it’s expected it will take some time to get through.

The weather the past few days has been raw and wet with snow in higher elevations, though this weekend, at least Friday and Saturday, is supposed to be pleasant.

Sunday brings another chance of rain and all of next week rain is expected.

The road is closed to vehicles at Lake McDonald Lodge on the west side and Jackson Glacier Overlook on the east side.

Hikers and bikers can go as far as Siyeh Bend on the east side and Road Camp on the west side when crews aren’t working.

The Many Glacier Road is open, as is the Chief Mountain Road on the east side. The Two Medicine Road remains closed to motor vehicles.

The Camas Road and Inside North Fork Road to Doverspike meadow and south to Logging Creek is also open.
