Small fire burning in Glacier National Park, sees rain Tuesday
Hungry Horse News
A 30-acre fire is smoldering in the remote Muir Creek drainage on a ridge almost due west from Mount St. Nicholas in the southern end of Glacier National Park.
An area northeast of the Fielding Trail, southeast of the Coal Creek Trail, and northwest of the Park Creek Trail to include Mount Saint Nicholas climbing routes and the Fielding Trail between Park Creek and Coal Creek is closed. The Coal Creek and Park Creek Trails, as well as the Coal Creek and Park Creek Wilderness Campgrounds, remain open.
Some areas near the fire have burned previously.
A Type III team headed up by Mike West is overseeing the fire and seven firefighters from Arizona are on the ground.
The fire is in steep terrain with loads of blowdown from previous fires.
Packers staged structure protection materials at Park Service patrol cabins and the Scalplock fire lookout to be prepared if these structures require protection in the future.
Rainfall, cooler temperatures, and higher humidity over the fire late last week tempered fire activity through the weekend and more rain was falling on Tuesday as the Hungry Horse News went to press.
