Yesterdays: Flathead County overpays for postcards

A large bull moose was frequenting West Glacier, causing concern that children walking to school on paths walled off by three feet of snow on either side may run into him. A pheasant feeding project was started by the Northern Rocky Mountain Sportsmen’s association, with plans to clear snow from strips in the Sunrift area and spread grain.

Jan. 31, 1964
A new chapter of the Flathead Lifesaving and Rescue Association was organized in Hungry Horse, with the Hungry Horse Homemakers Club to serve as the ladies’ auxiliary. A “unicorn” mule deer was spotted by Ousel Creek, a doe with one eight-inch long horn crossing Highway 2 with a fawn.

Two bull elk were shot within Glacier National Park near the Goat Lick off Highway 2, the poacher was not identified. The elk were given to the Blackfeet Tribal Council to be utilized in Browning School’s hot lunch program. The new nursing facility at Montana Veterans Home was set to open by Feb. 15.

Flathead County asked recipients of 210 postcards mailed to newly registered voters to copy the information from the cards and send them back after overpaying the Postal Service about $2,700 for them. The problem was caused by a postage meter in the courthouse, accidentally set to $13 for each card. The Postal Service promised to reimburse the county 90% of the postage cost for all cards returned, which would reduce taxpayer losses to $300.

A rare Wilson’s snipe — the first in 15 years — was spotted by Glacier National Park biologist Steve Gniadek on Lower McDonald Creek during the Christmas bird count. The River Road bike path, scheduled to be built the year prior, received its funding Jan. 13.

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team celebrated winning the Class A Divisional Title. Whitefish’s Alexander Parkhurst bought a winning Powerball ticket at Super 1 in Columbia Falls, claiming a $40,000 prize.
