Boys pick up two key conference victories

| January 31, 2024 2:00 AM

The Columbia Falls boys basketball team grabbed a couple of key conference wins last week, dropping Ronan, 47-29 at home Thursday night and then Bigfork on the road Saturday 63-51.

The boys are now 4-1 in conference and 6-5 overall.

Against Ronan the Wildcats shot out to a 16-0 lead in the first stanza and never looked back. The Chiefs had no answer for Cody Schweikert, who had 28 to lead the Cats in the win.

“It was very good team defense on our part,” coach Chris Finberg said. “Ronan didn’t have very many good looks.”

Against Bigfork, the Cats clawed back from a 19-5 first quarter deficit and were down just 28-26 at the break.

They took the lead in the third and pulled away in the fourth outscoring the Vikings 22-12.

“We just kept at it,” Finberg said.

Jace Hill had 23 to lead the Cats, while Schweikert had 12 and Dayne Tu had 8. Easton Brooks had a nice game off the bench with 6.

The boys travel to Libby Thursday and are on the road Friday against Whitefish.
