School District 6 was looking at an addition to the high school. The main building was built in 1940 at a cost of $100,000 when the school had enrollment of 100 youths. Total enrollment now was expected to be about 365 kids. The addition would add about 10,200 square feet to the school.

Jan. 10, 1964

Rangers Bob Frauson and Jack Stark counted the bighorn sheep in Glacier National Park’s Many Glacier Valley. On one trip they counted 41 ewes and eight rams; on another 34 ewes and 20 rams. At the time, it was estimated there were about 125 sheep in Glacier. Montana was celebrating its centennial as being established as a territory on Jan. 10, 1864 at Bannack. It became a territory officially on May, 26, 1864 and a state Nov. 8, 1889.

There would be a public hearing on widening the LaSalle Road (now Highway 2) into four lanes from the Blue Moon down to the airport. The hearing would be held at the LaSalle Grange.

The ARCO Aluminum plant in Columbia Falls was not included in a package of ARCO plants that were sold to Alcan Aluminum of Montreal. Workers were worried that the local plant would be sold and their jobs would be at risk.

Pilot Dave Hoerner, who was tracking a radio-collared grizzly from the air, saw the bear get attacked by a pack of about 17 wolves at the edge of a meadow in Glacier National Park on Oct. 25, 1993. The wolves were nipping at the bear as she moved along. Five avalanche victims killed the week before were following an illegally built trail in the Swan Range, investigators found.

The Belton Bridge in West Glacier was due for renovation. The bridge had been closed a couple of years as its approaches were deemed unsafe. The bridge provides secondary access to Glacier National Park headquarters, but only for pedestrians.
