Glacier closes Sun Road over Logan Pass

| August 28, 2024 12:35 PM

Glacier National Park closed the Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass just before 2 p.m. Wednesday after a cold front swept through, dropping snow on the pass.

The road was closed due to snow and icy conditions from Avalanche Creek to Jackson Glacier Overlook. Logan Pass is at 6,640 feet.

The weather isn't expected to stay bad for very long. Tomorrow highs should bounce back to about 70 with sunshine, but tonight temperatures will be in the 30s.

This weekend it should be in the 80s with plenty of sun.

Once the ice melts, the Park Service will reopen the road. Glacier can see snow any month of the year and snowstorms in September are fairly common, but in August, not so much, though there have been snowstorms in the high country in August in the past.

The Sun Road typically closes for the winter season over Logan Pass in mid-October. Glacier then plows the lower reaches to Avalanche until mid-December and then to Lake McDonald Lodge from mid-December to early April, when plows start clearing winter snows.
