Aug. 31 would mark the end of letters postmarked Trail Creek, Montana. The Post Office at the Canada border was closing. It had been open for 50 years. Today, the border crossing is closed as well.

Aug. 21, 1964
The lost and found in Glacier National Park revealed some interesting items. In one bag, there was a set of glass eyes, one was more bloodshot than the other. They both appeared to be for the same man. Additionally, someone turned in a set of false teeth found by a person at Baring Creek Falls.

Aug. 23, 1974
Doug Chadwick was hired to survey goats in Glacier National Park from Sperry Glacier north to Ahern Pass. The Park at the time estimated there were 600 to 900 mountain goats in the park. Chadwick would go on to be a rather famous author and National Geographic writer.

Front page photo and story featured Paul Grilley and Patti Davis’s marriage photo. Patti was the daughter of President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy. They were also featured in the photo. Terry and Donna Grilley, Paul’s parents, were also in the photo.

The Starvation Creek Fire had burned into Canada. The fire started in Glacier National Park near the border. It was 2,200 acres and had closed access to Kintla Lake.

An iron eagle sculpture perched on an arch at Paul DeToni’s property on Highway 2 just before the West Entrance to Glacier National Park was causing a stir. The huge iron eagle at the time blocked some of the views into the park. It was eventually moved to Libby.

The federal government withdrew a proposal to list the wolverine under the Endangered Species Act. They claimed at the time the population was expanding a growing. Today the wolverine has protection as an Endangered Species under the Act.
