The new Great Northern Railway depot was set to open at the end of Nucleus Avenue. The old depot was cut in two sections, pulled apart and the new depot was built in between. The sections were to be sold.

Crews had started construction on the expansion of the Anaconda Aluminum Co. plant. School District 6 had 1,729 students. A creel census in Glacier National Park for August showed 641 anglers caught 2,024 fish over 3,482 hours of fishing.

The Burlington Northern Railway crossing at Highway 40 near St. Richard’s Church was being considered for an overpass or underpass as the state had plans to widen the highway to four lanes. The idea never came to fruition.

Columbia Falls police officer Bob Dettweiler helped two kids, age 14 and 16, get out of the city drain system after they got lost and couldn’t get out of the pipe. They wandered about a quarter mile under Nucleus Avenue, accessing the sewer from an open manhole cover.

Plum Creek Timber Co. sealed a deal to buy 870,000 acres of timberlands from the Champion International Corp. School enrollment was up 31 students to total, with 2,501 students in Columbia Falls.

Most of the fires burning in the Flathead were “on cycle” said fire ecologist Steve Barrett, noting the last major fires in the region were in the 1920s and so the woods were mature and prime to burn again. However, there was concern about the loss of old growth hemlock and cedar trees along Lake McDonald.

A severe thunderstorm wreaked havoc, knocking down trees on area homes. Marijuana shops reported being the target of burglaries, as thieves threw rocks through the windows and tried to make off with the loot.
