Richard L. “Dick” Hillstrom was born April 23, 1938 on a farm near Lyons, Nebraska to Ruth Sears Hillstrom and Roy Hillstrom. He was raised in eastern Nebraska, graduating from Lyons High School in 1956. He headed west and never looked back. He worked for the Forest Service to pay for tuition to the University of Montana in Missoula, majoring in forestry. Dick joined the Army in the late 1950s and served proudly in the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon his honorable discharge, he started in the logging business.

He married Mary Jacobson on July 2, 1966 in Missoula. Shortly thereafter, they bought their place north and west of Whitefish where he passed on Sept. 29, 2022. Dick was in the logging business for many years and ran cattle on his place. He enjoyed both businesses and still ran a few cows on the day of his death. He leaves behind his wife Mary of Whitefish; two sisters Zelta Preston (Randall) of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Vendla Block of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; and many other beloved family and friends. Dick was a special and beloved man. Per his wishes, his body was cremated and no public services were held.
