Sun Road closes down to Lake McDonald Lodge
Glacier National Park will close to the Going-to-the-Sun Road down to Lake McDonald Lodge for the winter season by Dec. 15. The road actually closed down to the lodge last week because of winter weather and it doesn’t look like it will reopen.
The Camas Road will close Jan. 1 for the winter.
On the east side, secondary roads have closed for the winter season, but as of presstime, the Going-to-the-Sun Road was still open to Rising Sun.
Visitors can hike, ski and snowshoe beyond the gates, but bicycling is not allowed in winter.
Snowshoers and hikers are asked to stay out of ski tracks. It is illegal to walk pets, even with a leash, beyond the gates in the winter.
Two front country campgrounds, St. Mary and Apgar, have limited camping in winter. There is no running water, but there is a pit toilet.
Some areas of the park close all winter to public entry except for travel on trails. That includes the Belton Hills and parts of the Apgar Range on the west side, portions of the North Fork and St. Mary Flats and Two Dog Flats on the east side. The closures are to protect wintering wildlife.
Also, Glacier’s water bodies are closed to boats and other watercraft in the winter.
