Girls go 1-2 to start the season as defense falters
The Columbia Falls girls basketball team went 1-2 on the week. They opened the season on the road last Tuesday with a 65-48 win over Hamilton, but at the Northwest-Southwest Tip-Off tourney, they lost to Dillon, 65-34 and Loyola 55-39.
Against Hamilton, Hope McAtee had 25 and Taryn Borgen had 20 in the win. McAtee also had 11 rebounds.
But the Wildkats had a tough time against Dillon, as the Beavers shot out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and then outpaced the Kats 23-10 in the second and never looked back.
McAtee had 10 in the loss. Against Loyola the Kats found themselves down 31-16 at the break and couldn’t recover. Maddie Moultray had seven rebounds in the loss.
Coach Cary Finberg wasn’t happy with the team’s performance.
“I don’t think we played like we’re capable of,” he said. “Maybe a couple of quarters (overall). I figured it would take awhile to get going.”
He noted that offense comes and goes, but the team just wasn’t very good defensively.
“Bottom line, that’s on me,” he said.
The girls will continue to be road warriors as they look to improve. They travel to Lewistown this Friday and Saturday to face Glendive and Lewistown and then next Tuesday play Frenchtown on the road.
The girls don’t have a home game until Jan. 13, when they face Whitefish.
