Couple resurrects old Peace on Earth sign
Scotty and Jacque Demongin have resurrected one of the old “Peace on Earth” signs that used to go over Highway 2 during the Christmas season.
There were two signs, one that went across Highway 2 at the east end of town and another that went across the west end of town, recalled Steve Melby of the Columbia Falls Lions Club.
The long metal signs were tough to put up and take down and decades ago a logging truck clipped one and broke it -— that was the end of them.
They had been sitting at the Klothes Kloset in storage since and the Demongins recently acquired one, which was in very rough shape, the Demongins said.
They took it to an ironworker and had it fixed and Scotty said he put new decorations and lights on the sign.
It now sits in front of the Gateway Building which the couple owns, greeting folks on Nucleus Avenue. The Demongins say its message seems fitting for the times, with all the strife in the world.
