Columbia Falls would float about $30,000 in bonds to pave Nucleus Avenue from Highway 40 to the Great Northern Rail line as well as Sixth Street to the high school. Glacier National Park reported that cars had 3.4 passengers each as they entered the park, on average.

Construction would start soon on expanding the Anaconda Aluminum Company plant by adding another potline. The expansion would expand output from about 135 million tons annually to 200 million tons annually.

Glacier Park researchers were measuring Sperry and Grinnell glaciers. Sperry was about 275 acres and Grinnell about 300 acres. In 1901, Sperry covered 810 acres and Grinnell about 525 acres. Still, they had noticed little change is surface area covered in the last 6 years.

The newspaper had a large feature on Kay Luding, who was in her 30th summer managing Sperry Chalet in Glacier National Park. The operation of the chalet continues in the Luding family today.

The area saw its first frost, as the temperature dropped down to 31 degrees at the airport and colder elsewhere. It was the coldest it had been since 1910.

Researchers were tracking the behavior of mountain goats and people at Logan Pass. The goats appeared to be using people as “human shields” against predators. Sarah Markegard was doing the field work for the study and had spent countless hours at the pass.

Plum Creek announced that it was closing its mills temporarily as the log supply was tightened due to wildfires. There were so many fires the woods had been restricted and no one was logging.
