Stage 2 still in effect
Residents are reminded that Stage 2 fire restrictions are still in effect across most of the Flathead Valley.
The significant widespread rainfall has temporarily reduced the severity of fire season, but fire risk is expected to increase once again and persist for several more weeks, fire managers note.
Stage 2 fire restrictions prohibit all campfires, smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials; and operating an internal combustion engine between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m. Also, one-hour foot patrols are required following any work prior to 1 p.m.
There are exemptions to the rule, particularly for agriculture in harvest season.
It’s also illegal for most people to operate a motor vehicle off a designated road or trail.
Columbia Falls city has gone to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, which prohibit campfires and other open flames, save for a grill like a gas grill that can be turned on and off.
