Softball drubs Browning, but loses close game to Polson

| April 26, 2023 2:00 AM

The Columbia Falls softball team hammered Browning last week 20-0 in a game that lasted all of 2-1/2 innings, but they lost to conference foe Polson Friday, 8-6.

The Wildkats are now 5-3 on the sason.

Against Browning it was all Columbia Falls. Aspen Dawson hit a homer to open up the first inning and would single later in the inning as the Kats shot out to an 8-0 lead.

She would then hit a grand slam in the second to make it 20-0.

All told, Dawson went 4 for 4. Maddie Moultray got the win the mound, striking out four and giving up no hits. She also hit a triple.

Against Polson, the Pirates put up 5 runs in the top of the first and held on for the win. The Kats hurt themselves with an error and a Polson runner advancing on a dropped third strike in the first.

The Kats responded with two in the bottom of the first. They’d put up another run in the second and fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Sydney Mann hit a double to bring two runs across the plate and put the Kats up, 6-5.

But Polson put up 3 in the top of the seventh and the Kats couldn’t get a run across the bottom of the inning as they hit a grounder and two fly balls to end the game.

Moultray went the distance for the Kats, with six strikeouts. She gave up 9 hits but only 2 earned runs.

The Kats travel to Whitefish Thursday. Gametime is 5 p.m. They’re at the Frenchtown Invitation Friday and Saturday.
