Yesterdays: Road over Hungry Horse Dam opens

Oct. 24, 1952

Road access over the top of the Hungry Horse Dam was scheduled to open Nov. 2 for the first time ever, as the dam was nearing completion. The road is 2,115 feet long over the dam.

Oct. 26, 1962

Sen. Lee Metcalf was headlining a Democratic rally in Columbia Falls. The Forest Service paid out cone collectors about $8,000 for 1,000 bushels of various conifer cones. The seeds from the cones would be used to grow more trees. A bushel of spruce cones brought $9 apiece.

50 years ago

Oct. 27, 1972

Auctioneers were selling off old farm equipment and other items from the Mr. and Mrs. James Burns estate. Burns moved here as a youngster with his family in 1894. There were horse-drawn plows and other items up for sale. The job situation was good, not only did mills have good employment, 400 worked in the Christmas tree industry.

Oct. 28, 1982

The GSA park was dedicated to the City of Columbia Falls. It took about five years to develop the park along Highway 2. The county did most of the work on the park, though the land was deeded to the city by the federal government as surplus in 1977. The county did the work because the city didn’t have the money. Today it’s known as Marantette Park.

Oct. 29, 1992

The newspaper featured a full-page ad by Bob Brown, who was running for state Senate. Columbia Falls voters, in turn, would decide on whether to change the form of government from a Mayor-manager to a city manager, who would run the day-to-day operations of the city.

Oct. 24, 2002

Glacier Park superintendent Mick Holm said he would keep Logan Pass open on day-to-day basis as the weather was nice. He was the last superintendent to do so. Now the park closes in mid-October, no matter what the weather.

The Columbia Falls girls soccer team beat Livingston in an overtime shootout to make it to the state A finals. They would face undefeated Billings Central in that game and lose 6-0. The field had to be cleared of snow before the game.
