Air bags and seat belts probably mitigated a chain reaction accident at the intersection of Highway 40 and Sandy Hill Lane about 11:30 a.m.. Monday morning.
A westbound SUV rear-ended a pickup truck trying to make a left hand turn onto Sandy Hill Lane. The impact, in turn, drove the pickup into the opposite lane where it was struck by an eastbound SUV head-on.
All told, five people suffered injuries in the crash, but none of them were life-threatening, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
The crash remains under investigation.
Three Rivers Ambulance, Whitefish Fire and Ambulance and Columbia Falls Fire all responded to the scene. Traffic was re-routed around the wreck until it could be cleaned up.
