July 18, 1952

Crews in Glacier Park were blasting and shoveling snow to open the Gunsight Pass Trail to hikers and horse parties.

July 20, 1962

Lots in the city square were sold for a new Bank of Columbia Falls off Nucleus Avenue. Six different owners sold their parcels, including the local VFW.

50 years ago

July 21, 1972

Most visitors liked the new boardwalk up to the Hidden Lake Overlook at Logan Pass. The park put in the boardwalk to preserve vegetation. You could get a raft trip from the dock at Lake McDonald down McDonald Creek for $3. Front page photo featured the trip.

July 22, 1982

Glacier National Park superintendent Bob Haraden said he was impressed with how Canadians mined coal north of the border during a tour. But he was worried about the unseen damage a proposed mine at Cabin Creek could do the park.

July 23, 1992

The Columbia Falls City Council voted against changing the zoning between Nucleus Avenue and Third Avenue West to allow for a proposed RV Park. Josh Skisbrud was killed when he fell off Glacier Park’s Mount Gould. It was believed slippery rocks were to blame.

July 18, 2002

The Fox Creek Fire just outside St. Mary on Blackfeet Tribal lands put on a show as it burned in timber. It was started by lightning. The fire burned about 5,700 acres in a few days. Ironically, the same area saw about three feet of snow just a few weeks before, but the timber dried out quickly.

Carrie Reynolds of Columbia Falls won $25,000 in a Montana Lottery scratch card. Reynolds said she would use the money to help her husband in his battle with cancer.
