Aug. 29, 1952

The Anaconda Mining Co. announced it would purchase land near Teakettle Mountain for a new aluminum smelter. They bought 280 acres owned by Henry and Marion Larkin, 160 by Bernard Tracey, 238 by Pat Kelly and 70 by Edwin Johnson. Prices paid were between $10 to $25 an acre, plus renumeration for buildings.

Aug. 31, 1962

The Bad Rock Fire Department was getting a 10 horsepower, eight-horn siren for its fire hall. The siren was expected to cover the 7-mile long fire district and be loud enough so farmers in their fields could hear it.

Sept. 1, 1972

Glacier National Park did a survey of vehicles that entered the park over a week in August and found that 12.26% of visitors were from California; slightly more than the 12.14% that were from Montana. Alberta was 11.33% and Minnesota was 6.58%.

Sept. 2, 1982

The Federal Highway Administration released a final environmental impact statement that OK’d a four-lane highway from Hungry Horse to West Glacier. The road, obviously, was modified, with three lanes in some places and four lanes in others.

Aug. 27, 1992

Ron Redeau of Oregon was mauled by a grizzly while hiking the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail from Many Glacier. He met the sow and cubs on the trail and when she attacked the two fell down the steep slope along the trail. He told folks that helped treat his injuries that the fall probably saved him because the bear let go of him and stopped attacking. He declined an interview with the newspaper.

Aug. 29, 2002

Nucleus Avenue used to have an arch over it. But then it broke and was never replaced. The newspaper found the photo of when it broke — it was Sept. 10, 1975. The arch’s posts were badly rotted and then a gust of wind broke the arch in two.
