Soccer: Girls blank Bigfork, Stevi, but lose to Bulldogs

The Columbia Falls girls soccer team had a great start to the week, dropping conference rival Bigfork at home Thursday, 6-0 and Stevensville on the road Saturday, 4-0.
But on Tuesday they were blanked by conference rival Whitefish, 4-0 at home.
The Bulldogs put up three scores in the first half and Columbia Falls couldn’t mount a rally.
The Lady Wildcats had their looks, both Maddie Robison and Cheyanne Johnston-Heinz had some really good looks — and shots — but they just didn’t find the back of the net.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, played a crisp game and moved the ball well against Columbia Falls, which suffered from some defensive breakdowns in the first half.
Coach Thomas Clark said he was disappointed in the loss, but at least it’s early in the season and the girls can make adjustments.
“We need some seniors to step up and finish their chances,” he said. “It was kind of a wake up call.”
He expects the team to bounce back. He noted the squad has a lot of talent and he has confidence in them. They’ll learn from this and move on. Best thing is they get to play the Bulldogs again next month.
“The sky isn’t falling,” he said.
The girls played well prior to the Whitefish game.
Last week, Johnston Heinz had a pair of goals in the Bigfork win, as the team outshot Bigfork 23-5. Zoey Byrd had five saves between the posts. Heinz also had an assist on Hope McAtee’s strike in the second half.
The Lady Wildcats were up 2-0 after eight minutes of play.
Against Stevi, Maddie Robison had a pair of goals in the second half as the Wildcats blew the game open in the second half.
The girls won’t play again until next Tuesday, when they face Polson on the road.
