Plum Creek Logging Co. was the high bidder for 15.8 million board feet of timber on Hungry Horse Creek as part of the Hungry Horse Dam project. Top bid was $24.70 per thousand board feet of white pine. Today mature white pine is almost non-existent. The tree species have largely been decimated by blister rust.

Five elk — two bulls and three cows — were trapped from Nyack Flats and transferred to outside Eureka by Montana Fish and Game. The elk were causing crop damage at Nyack, so the agency moved them.

The new North Valley Hospital was nearly completed in Whitefish.
It featured 50 beds with room to expand to 100 and cost more than $1 million. It has since been torn down and a new North Valley Hospital was completed in 2007.

An unknown predator was killing dogs and pets along Columbia Mountain. Homeowners near the mountain reported two dogs and a prized goat missing. Game Warden Dave Wedum suspected a grizzly bear and set a barrel trap, but he said for all he knew, it could have been Sasquatch.

Low-lying homes in the area were flooding from spring runoff and snows on the Going-tothe- Sun Road were the deepest crews had seen in nearly 10 years. At Two Medicine, the snow was still higher than some of the cabins.

Montana Department of Transportation officials said there was still hope to save the Red Bridge in Columbia Falls, but more engineering studies were needed. Nothing ever came of it and the bridge is still neglected today.
