A Columbia Falls teen is showing slow signs of recovery in a Seattle hospital after he was struck head-on by an alleged intoxicated driver June 20.

Jaydon DeRosa, 18, has transitioned to breathing on his own, according to posts on Facebook.

According to Montana Highway Patrol, a 32-year-old Kalispell man was driving north in a Volkswagen Jetta when it failed to negotiate a right curve, crossed the center line and struck a Honda Accord driven by an DeRosa from Columbia Falls.

Both drivers were taken to Logan Health for treatment. The driver of the Jetta was later identified as Kyle Gardner, 31, of Kalispell. He died of injuries suffered in the crash.

According to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Thoreson, both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
