A young man from the Flathead Valley was killed after his vehicle went off the Upper Dam Road in Hungry Horse early Tuesday morning.

The car went off the highway at a turnout that overlooks the South Fork of the Flathead and plummeted about 200 feet down the steep slope not far from the dam.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The Hungry Horse News spoke to a young man who said he was a friend of the victim. The friend and two others said they found him about 10 a.m. in the morning after getting some previous text messages. The driver was apparently camped up the Hungry Horse Reservoir prior to the accident.

The friends then notified authorities.

A camper who was staying in a tent near the South Fork at the bottom of the slope said he heard the crash about 6:30 a.m.

Two Bear Air responded to the scene and lowered rescue personnel down to the scene and they recovered the body about 1 p.m.

The Montana Highway Patrol and Flathead County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the accident. The Hungry Horse Fire Department, ALERT, Three Rivers Ambulance also responded to the scene.
