Former Mayor Herman Benzien of Columbia falls had petitioned Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to make Lion Lake only open to fishing for people 65 and older. The 40-acre lake was the former water supply for the town of Hungry Horse. Today it’s open to everyone to fish in, but has a big population of stunted perch.

The Forest Service had begun looking at the possibility of placing a portion of the Flathead River into the National Wild and Scenic River system. The Hungry Horse Chamber of Commerce had a big float in the Whitefish Winter Carnival.

It was the end of the road for the tandem of Ralph Johnson and son Kyle. Johnson was the basketball coach and Kyle was his last son to play for him. Johnson said he coached Kyle just like he would any other kid on the team.

The Coyote Roadhouse Restaurant banned undersheriff Bud Biddle after a dispute over a bill.
Biddle referred to the food as “pure crap” after he and his party ate everything on their plates.

Wrestler Caleb Schaeffer set a Columbia Falls record, going 38-0 in his senior season and winning a state title at 130 pounds. It was the best record of any wrestler in school history at the time.

A group known as the “Centennial Arch Committee” brought forth plans to build an arch over Nucleus Avenue. The arch was never built.
