Wildcats thump Corvallis in last home game of the season

The Columbia Falls football team hammered Corvallis 49-7 at home Friday night for the squad’s second win of the season.

Quarterback Mason Peters was 16 of 24 for 276 yards passing in one of his best games of the season and Brad Nieves scored two touchdowns, one on offense and one on defense. The defensive score came after he stripped the ball from a Corvallis runner and sprinted down the sideline 60 yards for a touchdown.

The Cats scored early and often against the Blue Devils and had a 42-0 lead at the half.

Taylor Bryan had two touchdowns in the second quarter including a great run after the catch to score a TD with no time remaining in the half.

Kicker Neils Getts was perfect on the night, hitting all seven extra points.

Coach Jaxon Schweikert was pleased with the performance.

“We’ve been playing better,” he said. “We played a lot faster.”

He said even though they lost to Hamilton the week before, the team played much better in that game and carried it forward this week.

“This week they played better and faster,” he said. Peters is only a sophomore and he hasn’t had a lot of time to throw this season.

“He got the ball out of his hands quicker,” Schweikert said. “His decision-making is much quicker. He’s done a heckuva job this year.”

The Wildcats won’t make the playoffs this season.

Their last game of the regular season is against Frenchtown (5-1) on the road. Schweikert said the key for the game will be to stop Frenchtown’s running game and force some turnovers. The Cats are now 2-5 on the year.
