Glacier Park says hikers and bikers will see weekday restrictions on Sun Road in June
Starting June 10, hikers and bikers won’t be able to use the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park beyond the gate at Avalanche Creek on weekdays because of sealing work being done on the highway. The road is expected to be open to hikers and bikers on weekends.
Park plows made it to Logan Pass last week, but they still have snow to clear beyond the pass at the Big Drift.
Because of road preservation work, the full length of the highway won’t open to vehicles before June 22.
The park anticipates the weekday closure will remain at Avalanche Creek through June 21, though travelers are urged to check the park’s road status page on the web before they leave for the most up-do-date information at https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm
In addition to the Sun Road restrictions, travelers can also expect work on other park roads this summer and then again the in fall, including pullouts on the Camas and Many Glacier roads.
In addition, travelers on Chief Mountain Highway in June should expect delays and pilot cars. The Chief Mountain Road is in rough shape both inside and outside the park. The same with the Many Glacier Road.
Folks traveling in Glacier this weekend are urged to keep an eye peeled for avalanches.
Last weekend 13 bicyclists were stranded on the alpine section of the highway after a rockslide and then an avalanche at Triple Arches blocked the highway.
Folks should also be on the lookout for road crews, as some pullouts will be treated this weekend as well beyond the avalanche gate.
