Park plows about three miles from Logan Pass
Glacier National Park plow crews had reached Big Bend on the Going-to-the-Sun Road as of presstime, which is about three miles from Logan Pass on the west side.
A spring snowstorm Saturday night into Sunday saw more snow fall in the Park. Snows at lower elevations had largely melted by Sunday afternoon — only about an inch of snow was on the ground, but temperatures were frigid for this time of the year.
On Monday morning, the mercury dropped to 4 degrees at St. Mary. West of the Divide, temperatures were in the low to mid-teens as skies cleared.
Pavement preservation work was expected to start on Wednesday and will run through the spring. Motorists can expect delays and hikers and bikers could see restrictions in the afternoons when crews are working.
Glacier will not open the Sun Road to motor vehicles to Logan Pass until June 22 at the earliest because of roadwork.
The free hiker-biker shuttle is expected to start up Mother’s Day weekend.
The hiker-biker closure on the west side is currently at Packer’s Roost when crews are working and at Rising Sun on the east side.
The North Lake McDonald Road is closed to foot, stock, bicycle, and vehicle traffic from the Upper McDonald Creek trailhead to the end of the road as utility work is taking place.
Most of Glacier’s secondary roads are closed to vehicles, though the Inside North Fork Road is open to Doverspike Meadow, north of Polebridge. The Camas Road is also open.
