Columbia Falls residents have a new option when it comes to wellness therapy as Bearfoot Reflexology has opened its doors on Nucleus Ave.

Located in the basement of Bonnie’s Reflexology, Bearfoot Reflexology is owned by Brittany Ratzlaff, who took up practicing reflexology after receiving treatment for hip pain from Bonnie Mickelson, now her teacher and landlord.

“I was going to school for nursing when I developed terrible hip pain and chiropractic was not helping,” Ratzlaff said. “My mother suggested that I try reflexology and I came in and saw Bonnie. After a couple of sessions, my hip felt amazing. That helped me change my focus of study to reflexology.”

Tracing its origins as far back as ancient Egypt and China, the practice of reflexology is centered around the belief that there are certain points or “reflex areas” on the feet and hands that are connected energetically to specific organs and body parts through energy channels in the body. By applying pressure to reflex areas, a reflexologist is said to remove energy blockages and promote health in the related body area. Pressure on the reflex points is also said to help to balance the nervous system and stimulates the release of endorphins that help to reduce pain and stress.

“I really enjoy it. It helps a lot of people and I like helping people feel better,” Ratzlaff said.

According to Ratzlaff, reflexology can help with a variety of health issues, including pain management, healing, arthritis, carpal tunnel and much more.

“You spend a lot of time on your feet, so at one point or another, all of the toxins in your body are going to your feet, which is what causes them to be so sore,” she said. “Most people don’t realize that your feet are so central to your entire body.”

After learning the practice of reflexology from Mickelson, Ratzlaff opened her first practice in Whitefish before making the move to Columbia Falls about three months ago. Ratzlaff said she has been busier since making the move to Columbia Falls and hopes business will increase as the weather warms up.
