Local vets recognize Legion's 100th birthday

Columbia Falls Freedom Post No. 72, American Legion, celebrated the Legion’s 100th anniversary Monday, March 11 at the Veteran’s Home in Columbia Falls.

The American Legion was chartered March 15, 1919 in Paris, France, following the end of World War I and is the largest veteran’s organization in the world. The Legion comes to the aid of more than 1,000 veterans and military families every year. During the meeting, four members of Freedom Post 72 were honored with continuous years of service certificates by Commander Bill Rhine. Larry Netzel and Mike Shepard were honored for 25 years of service, Mike Hirtes for 45 and Joan Ortmann for 55 years.

All members enjoyed cake and ice cream following the meeting and ceremony. Veterans can contact Freedom Post 72 at 406-212-8687.
