Gatorade names Street Montana Track Athlete of the Year

After dominating the Montana high school javelin scene for the past two seasons, Angellica Street picked up another honor last week when she was named the Gatorade Montana Girls Track and Field Player of the Year.

Street won her second straight state title in javelin at the state track meet in Laurel this May and also set a new Montana all-class state record with a throw of 156 feet, 11 inches. The throw broke the record set by Huntley Project’s Hailey Poole in 2016 and won this year’s competition by more than 37 feet.

As impressive as the throw was, it was not her longest of the season. That came earlier in May in a dual against Glacier, where Street recorded a throw of 158 feet, 8 inches. The throw was the fourth longest among high school athletes in the nation this year.

Street was also third in the shot put at state, with a throw of 37 feet, 7 inches and 13th in discus, helping lead the Wildkats to a sixth-place finish at the state meet.

Street also had a good year in the classroom, where she has maintained a B average.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program, now in its 34th year, annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school sports and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored each year.

Street is the first athlete from Columbia Falls selected for the honor and joins recent Gatorade Montana Girls Track & Field Athletes of the Year Camila Noe (2017-18, Bozeman High School), Annie Hill (2016-17, Glacier High School), Christina Aragon (2015-16 & 2014-15, Billings Senior High School), and Erika McLeod (2013-14, Butte High School) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Street is the first winner from a school smaller than class AA since Whitehall’s Kellee Glaus won the award for the 2009-10 season.

As a part of Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” Street also has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of her choosing. She is also eligible to submit an essay to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for the organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year.

Street will be a senior this fall.
