Sandra ‘Sandy’ Anne (Hewitt) Sutherland

Sandra “Sandy” Anne (Hewitt) Sutherland, of Columbia Falls, died unexpectedly May 23, 2019, in her home.

She is survived by sons Thom (Serena) Sutherland, of Kirkland, Washington; and Dean Sutherland, of Rocky Boy; and her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, Richard Sutherland, who passed in 1984.

Sandy was born in 1943 in Brighton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, in 1961. She attended Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, earning a bachelor’s of arts degree in 1965.

After college, Sandy moved to Rocky Boy, where she taught third grade. She soon relocated to Columbia Falls and taught fourth grade at Talbott School from 1968 to 1970. In 1975 Sandy joined Smith’s (formerly B&B) and brought joy to the check stands for nearly 40 years. Most recently, Sandy worked for Loyal Care and sold tickets at Wildcats events.

Sandy was one-of-a-kind. Known for her kindness and loving care for others, her family and her community you would often find her cheering on her Columbia Falls Wildcats, University of Montana Grizzlies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

When not at a sporting event, she could be found spending time with friends, finding a good deal, taking an epic nap or getting lost in a book. Sandy lived for her regular trips to Laughlin, Reno and Vegas with friends as well as her road trips to Kirkland to see her son and grandchildren.

Sandy was a devout Christian, who loved the Lord and her church communities at Journey Church and St. Richard Catholic Church.

A celebration of life service and potluck reception will be held on her birthday, June 28, 2019, at 3 p.m. at Journey Church. No flowers necessary, please come to simply share and enjoy Sandy’s memory in the company of friends.
