Science and history

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park will host the 16th annual Waterton-Glacier Science and History Day on Tuesday, July 23, from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the St. Mary Visitor Center, located in St. Mary, in Glacier National Park. The event is free of charge and open to the public although park entrance fees are charged at the gate for people who don’t already have a park pass. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the one hour lunch break. Held yearly on the fourth Tuesday in July, this event alternates between the two national parks with Glacier hosting in odd years and Waterton Lakes hosting in even years. This is the first year the event has been held in St. Mary.

Science and History Day is a great way for the public to hear the latest results from scientists and historians carrying out projects in and around the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Presentations for this year are grouped into themes of fire ecology and social science, history, aquatic ecosystems, and wildlife. Topics for the 2019 program include ecosystem monitoring efforts in Waterton post Kenow fire, the history of bison hunting and utilization in Glacier National Park, the unique relationship between beavers, frogs and chytrid fungus, and the efforts to locate and enumerate bats in anticipation of white nose syndrome.

Attendees from Canada are reminded that a passport is required for crossing the U.S./Canada Border. A detailed agenda is available at https://www.nps.gov/rlc/crown/science-history_agenda.htm.
