Thoughts on school expansion

| January 30, 2019 8:16 AM

I have been reading of interest the suggestions by the building committee regarding School District Six. I did apply to be on this committee and either there was a lack of communication, or it was overlooked. There has been little if any inclusion of the Canyon School structure in the proposals. Some of the spaces are being used by the County Health Dept. but most of the school is empty. Why would this empty school be overlooked? Is it still the old attitude of busing the Canyon kids but never in reverse? The road goes both ways. Why cannot this school be used for preschool through 4th or 5th grades and filling in the numbers with children from Columbia Heights area if necessary? Same distance … new bridge. Why would taxpayers support NEW building projects when a relatively new building with a gym is left empty?

This school and structure is not being fully utilized. I approached the District over 3 years ago about opening at least a computer lab for kids in the Canyon. Many do not have computers linked to printers. I know because some come to my home to use our printer. Many of the children’s assignments these days come off of Google Chrome Classroom. We have no after school programs in the area. There is no Boys/Girls club for after school support. I’m happy to see this as a proposal, but no mention of some of this funding going to the Canyon. The school with its full lunch room, large gym, open classrooms, and a great playground was not even whispered. Currently the district has a shuttle from the schools to downtown (library, etc.) after school. Why can’t the District shuttle to the Canyon school?

As a taxpayer, I have been an ardent supporter of education and school building projects. However, I cannot support any proposal that does not include the Canyon school. In the ‘80s and ‘90s I served on the school board. We learned back then that the Canyon voters ARE necessary to pass any levy. Why would the Canyon voters support this levy if the school here is left empty? We might have limited funds, but not limited intellect. I encourage you to include the Canyon school building in your proposals.

Sincerely,
