Youth wrestlers do well at tourney

Columbia Falls had 15 youth wrestlers in action Saturday as Helena hosted the Helltown Throwdown Tournament.

Columbia Falls had two individual champions at the tournament as Jaxson Sterling pinned two of the opponents he faced in the novice 67 pound division while Jayden Hoerner pinned all three of the opponents he faced in the 187 pound middle school division.

Columbia Falls had nine other wrestlers finish in the top six in their divisions as Emmet Becker was second in the PeeWee 40 pound division, Brody Stacy was second in the bantam 56 pound division, Riley Byrd was third in the girls intermediate 71-77 pound division, Justin Windauer was fourth in the 102 pound middle school division, Blake Hoerner was fourth in the novice 92 pound division, Jace Becker was fifth in the intermediate 59 pound division, Lanum Nelson was sixth in the bantam 53 pound division, Cash Byrd was sixth in the 71 pound middle school division and Trey Torpen was sixth in the 149 pound middle school division.

The Columbia Falls team had less than a week of practices before entering the meet, but will have more preparation time for its next tournament in Butte Feb. 16-17. Many of the wrestlers will then be making the transition into the Columbia Falls Little Guy wrestling season, which begins Feb. 11.

Registration for the Little Guy season will be from 4-7 p.m. in the Columbia Falls High School cafeteria Jan. 24. A link to online registration can be found on the organization’s Facebook page.
