Youth wrestlers do well in Butte tourneys
Eighteen Columbia Falls youth wrestlers were in action in Butte over the weekend as they competed in the Cyclops meet as well as a middle school competition.
The two events hosted more than 1,000 wrestlers from Montana, Idaho and Canada.
Columbia Falls had 11 wrestlers at the Cyclops event, which saw pewees through intermediate wrestlers in action Saturday with the novice through cadet classes on Sunday.
Justin Windauer had the top finish among local competitors, earning first in the cadet 100 weight class while Emmet Becker was second in the pewee 40. Brody Stacy was second in the Bantam 56, Riley Byrd earned second in the girls novice 70 and Jayden Hoerner was second in the cadet 182 class. Jace Becker was third in the intermediate 59 class.
Columbia Falls also had four wrestlers finish in fifth place, including Cash Byrd in schoolboy 71, Blake Hoerner in novice 92, Trey Torpen in schoolboy 149 and Arne Troy in novice 78.
At the middle school tournament during the same time (which used no weight classes, only 16 man brackets formed using Madison Block Bracketing, where wrestlers are grouped within 10 percent of their actual weight), Jayden Hoerner was first, Windauer was second, Winslow Peters was third, Torpen was fourth and Troy finished sixth.
