Columbia Falls High School junior Laney Conger will be getting a unique look at a foreign culture next week as she travels to Guatemala with a group of students from the Big Fork and Bigsky (Polson) school Interact Clubs.

In association with their local Rotary Clubs, the students will be spend a week in the Central American country, where they will be with Maya Pedal, visit the women’s co-op at San Pedro La Laguna Atitlan, and visit Rotary water projects near Mazatenengo.

”It’s a chance to help out the locals and also get a taste of the culture down there,” Conger said about the trip. “I know the culture and the climate are going to be completely different down there, but I am looking forward to it. It should be interesting and I am looking forward to helping and learning.”

Conger, whose only other out-of-country experience has been on trips to Canada, says that she only got involved in the project recently after family friend and Maya Pedal owner Dave Renfrow suggested she join the other students on the trip. While Columbia Falls High School does not have an Interact Club, Conger was asked to join the others.

“I am feeling a bit spontaneous, but it should be a lot of fun,” Conger said. “It will give me a chance to use the Spanish I have been learning in school.”
