Oct. 22, 1948
After an unsuccessful plane search, Henry Sanders of Troy found his three horses that were lost in Upper Twin Creek of the South Fork. Two others horses were found near Green Mountain. There were about 350 horses total in the South Fork. Horses that were lost and never found had a slim chance of surviving the winter. These five were saved from being “Hungry Horses” the story noted.

Oct. 24, 1958
A front page photo showed Herb Knopp’s car adorned with eight dead deer. Knopp and his sons had taken the muleys near Fort Benton in the opening weekend of hunting season. “It’s winter meat,” the caption noted. “The Knopps have eight children.” Volunteers were getting ready to lay a 2,400-volt cable down for the new TV tower on Teakettle Mountain.

Oct. 25, 1968
The Aluminum Workers Trade Council AFL-CIO was in talks with the Anaconda Aluminum Co. over a new contract. About 930 men worked at the aluminum plant in Columbia Falls. The base wage of $2.97 per hour didn’t seem to be much of an issue, the company and the union noted. That was an increase of about 30 cents an hour.

Oct. 26, 1978
Kyle Johnson rushed for 116 yards and the Columbia Falls football team beat the Polson Pirates 6-0. The Cats were 3-4 on the season with one game to go against 6-1 Stevensville. A crew of hunters put a new marker on the Baptiste Grave up Hoke Creek. Baptiste was a trapper up the South Fork in the 1800s and guided some California miners through the area in 1861.

Glacier Park reopened the North Fork to vehicles, the first time since the Red Bench Fire burned through the area. About 500 rigs over the weekend took the chance to see the area, which was burned nearly to Bowman Lake. Cars had to drive the Inside North Road, because the temporary bridge across the North Fork had washed at out the approaches. The original Polebridge over the river was damaged in the fire.

The Columbia Falls football team won its first homecoming game in six years, beating Corvallis 25-7. Tyler Ladenburg was the quarterback and Brian Loucks rushed for 158 yards. It was the Cats first win of the season, as they were 1-5. The Columbia Falls girls soccer team, at 6-4, faced Missoula Sentinel in the playoffs. Whitney Lange was one of the top players for the Wildkats.

Plum Creek was showed off its new $9.5 million bio-filter at the MDF plant to Congressman Denny Rehberg. The filter was designed to filter formaldehyde and other emissions from the plant. Formaldehyde came from the glue used to make the MDF.
