History meets

The Columbia Falls Historical Society invites anyone with an interest in the history of the area to join them for an open meeting, Thursday, Oct. 25, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Teakettle Room in the North Valley Community Center. If you have any old photos of Columbia Falls or surrounding area please bring them to share with everyone. All photos will be displayed and prizes will be awarded. You do not have to have a photo to attend just an interest in history.

Hawk Watch

Glacier National Park will host a Mount Brown Hawk Watch Program on Saturday, Oct. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. pm near Lake McDonald Lodge. Park biologists will teach volunteers how to identify and count migrating raptors. The event is part of the park’s Year of the Bird celebration. Participants should bring binoculars and prepare to count Golden Eagles on their annual migration south past Mount Brown. Biologists, park staff, and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the integral role of raptors in our ecosystems, the risks they face, and why Glacier has started the Mount Brown Hawk Watch Program. The event will begin at the Golden Eagle interpretive sign near Jammer Joe’s parking lot; snacks and hot beverages will be provided. Attendees need not stay for the whole time. Volunteers can also hike to an observation point just below Mount Brown Lookout. People interested in hiking up Mount Brown should call the Glacier Citizen Science Office for hike times and additional details.

Autumn birding

The Flathead Audubon Society invites folks to join Leslie Kehoe and Bob Lee on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 8 a.m. for a great day of birding around Ninepipes and other bird abundant areas of the Mission Valley. Meet at the White Oak Park’ N’ Ride on Highway 93 south of Kalispell. The group will be out most of the day, so bring optics, appropriate clothing and lunch/snacks. Toastmasters

The Columbia Falls Speaks Toastmasters Haunted House Mash Bash-Open House is Oct. 30, noon to 1 p.m. at the Freedom Bank Basement Conference Room. In addition, the group, which focuses on fine tuning public speaking skills, meets the first, third and fifth Tuesdays at noon at the basement conference room at the bank. Call (406) 212-6292.

School off

On Monday, Oct. 22 there will be no school for Columbia Falls School District 6 students. This is a change to the current school calendar. The Columbia Falls School school board voted to add an additional day of teacher instruction to the school calendar so the district can provide Active Threat training for the new staff, and for those that were unable to attend last school year.
