Open house

The Columbia Falls Senior Citizens Center will hold an open house at its facility on Nucleus Avenue from 2 to 6 p.m. May 11. Come see the upgrades to the center and meet with its members and staff. There will be door prizes, entertainment and refreshments served.

Rivers meeting

The next comprehensive river management meeting for the three forks of the Flathead is May 16. This meeting will focus on water quality conditions, management, and concerns as part of the efforts to develop the CRMP and is at the Cedar Creek Lodge in Columbia Falls from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include presentations on current water quality information and facilitated discussion on how water quality should be addressed in the CRMP. For those new to the comprehensive river management plan process, an introductory presentation on the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act will begin at 5:45 p.m. Future meeting topics and a preliminary schedule will be posted soon on the Flathead National Forest website.

Women meet

Columbia Falls Women’s Connection will have a Mother’s Day Tea on Wednesday, May 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the North Valley Hospital Community Room in Columbia Falls. Speakers are Reta Sands, who will share her collection of vintage aprons, and Sandi Oertley from Eureka will share her life of being single, satisfied and living on a ranch. Donations of personal care items, nonperishable food or cash donations will be collected for Ray of Hope. Cost is $8 and all women are welcome to attend. Internet talk

A talk on Internet safety and an introduction to the issue of human trafficking is at 5:30 p.m. May 16 at the Columbia Falls Junior High. Talk is by Sgt. Jeanne Parker of the Flathead County Sheriff’s Department, a member of the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Due to the sensitive nature of the talk, parents should not bring children.

Dam opens

The Bureau of Reclamation will open the Hungry Horse Dam visitor center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning May 25 through Sept. 8. Exhibits about the history of Hungry Horse Dam and its importance to the Federal Columbia River Power System are featured.

Community Market

The first Columbia Falls Community Market of the season will be from 5 p.m. until twilight Thursday, May 17 at The Coop in downtown Columbia Falls. The opening week is sponsored by Biggy’s Landscape Service and will feature music from Luke Dowler and The Lucky Breaks and beverages from Backslope Brewing and Glacier Distilling Company.

Stop smoking

A free stop smoking clinic will be held at the Whole Living Community Center May 15-17 and 20-24 from 7 to 8 p.m. Call Mike at 471-9069 for more information.

Family Forestry Expo

The annual Family Foresty Expo at the F.H. Stoltze Land and Lumber Trumbull Creek educational forest is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 with a host of educational exhibits, lunch and other events. This is the 29th year of the event. More information at: www.familyforestryexpo.org

Pie and plant sale

The Columbia Falls Our Savior’s Lutheran Church pie and plant sale is Saturday, May 12, from 8 a.m. - noon. There will be a variety of plants for sale; donated from our local gardens, yards, and homes.

Work day

May 19 the public is invited to attend the Glacier National Park Associates annual Volunteer Day at the West Glacier Community Building in Glacier National Park. Projects for the day will include trail work, helping at the Native Plant Nursery and many other projects. Participants should dress appropriately for work projects and bring gloves, lunch and drinking water.

Following a complimentary breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and a short GNPA business meeting, President Cheryl Klein will review other park projects including facility maintenance of historic structures, trail work, possible dates for these projects and the number of volunteers needed to complete each project.

Vets ceremonies

The United Veterans of the Flathead Valley will hold Memorial Day ceremonies (May 28) across the valley. Locally, they’ll be at Fairview Cemetery at 1:45 p.m., Marantette Park at 2:30 p.m., Woodlawn Cemetery at 3 p.m. and the Montana Veterans Home at 3:30 p.m.
