Park opens Camas Road to vehicles

Glacier National Park has opened the Camas Road to vehicle traffic for the summer. The road opened earlier this week.

Trails at lower elevations are finally starting to melt out from snow, though even trails in the Apgar area had patches of snow here and there. The Going-to-the-Sun Road as of press time was still closed at Lake McDonald Lodge, with west side crews about a mile above the loop, encountering snow depths of 15 feet.

On the east side, crews were working in near Rising Sun as of last report. No east side roads were open to vehicles as of press time. The hiker biker closure when plows are working in Two Medicine is at Running Eagle Falls.

As of press time, there was flooding in East Glacier Park. The Highway 49 underpass was flooded, and the road was closed to vehicles. The road flooded Saturday and still had water problems as of Tuesday. Montana Department of Transportation and the East Glacier Fire department were working on it, pumping water out of the underpass. It wasn’t clear if there was a broken water line or runoff, however.

The weather should be favorable for plowing most of the rest of the week, with partly cloudy skies and a slight chance of rain each day.
