Dozens of Columbia Falls students and teachers got a chance to build on their education as the school hosted a Lego Serious Play learning workshop at Cedar Creek Lodge Thursday.

With the help of Seattle-based legendary Lego builder Alice Finch, students and teachers learned about using Legos for team development and problem solving and how using a physical thought process can lead to unique learning opportunities.

“For today’s program, I geared the presentation toward how teachers can use Legos for things other than just building things. I showed them 10 different ways students can use Legos to learn differently and process things in different ways,” Finch said.

Second through 12th graders were selected to participate in the program, which challenged students to find new ways to communicate ideas.

One activity included building ducks from only six bricks and seeing how many different versions of a duck the students had come up with. Another activity had participants having to give only verbal instruction on how to build an object while others tried to build them.

“It is remarkable difficult how hard that is to do. It’s a really good way to get kids to actually practice the process of communicating and things like patience. It teaches them how to give clear, concise instructions,” Finch said.

Participants were also introduced to the three levels of Lego Robotics, WeDo, Boost and EV3.

It’s fun to use Legos to do things you would not normally think about using them for,” Finch said. “It’s a great way to learn.”
