Park plows at Logan Pass, Big Drift

Glacier National Park plow crews have reached Logan Pass and are working on the Big Drift on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The Big Drift is a large snow drift, often 50 feet deep or more, just east of Logan Pass.

West side crews have also been installing guardrail and completing other work on the road. After the winter snows fall, significant amounts of rock and debris are left behind.

The east side crew is working at Siyeh Bend and other areas of the east side, which saw significant snowfalls over the winter.

With Logan Pass plowed, ambitious bicyclists could cycle up to Logan Pass and ski the slopes this weekend. The road is open to Avalanche Creek to vehicles. When plows aren’t working, there’s no road restrictions, typically on weekends. When plows are working during weekdays, the hiker-biker closure is at Packer’s Roost.

On the east side, the road is open to Jackson Glacier Overlook to vehicles. When crews are working on the east side, there is no hiker-biker access beyond the gate.

It’s best to get an early start. At one point over the Memorial Day weekend, Glacier officials had to close the gate on the Sun Road at the foot of Lake McDonald because the parking at Avalanche and at Lake McDonald Lodge filled up.

The Park’s secondary roads are open except for the Cut Bank Road and the Inside North Fork road between Camas Creek and Logging Creek. That section has been closed to vehicles for several seasons now, due to road washouts. It’s often passable by foot and bicycle, though expect water to be over the road.
