Jan. 30, 1948

Glacier Park promised to have plenty of pack horses available for summer visitors. The Park at the time had 1,100 miles of trails. Glacier had 43 horses and 30 mules for staff use. Two slot machines that went missing were found in the Flathead River by some seventh-grade boys. They were apparently stolen from the Hungry Horse Bar in Martin City.

Jan. 31, 1958

Ann and Bill Slifer planned a Hidden Meadow Ranch for girls for girls inside Glacier National Park just north of Polebridge on a former homestead. The plot included an aspen stand and a 20 acre lake. The meadow and lake are still there, but the ranch is gone today and is no longer private land.

50 years ago

Feb. 2, 1968

Snowmobiling races at Loyal Chubb’s ranch north of Columbia Falls attracted 66 racers and 500 spectators. Snowmobiling at the time was Montana’s fastest growing sport. Mark Beckwith scored 24 points as the Wildcats beat Whitefish, 67-45 in basketball. Sliced bacon was 33 cents a pound.

Feb. 2, 1978

Famed artist and sculptor Asa “Ace” Powell died on Jan. 25. Powell was 66. He grew up in Apgar, while his father, Asa, worked for Glacier National Park. The elder Powell ran the horse barn and guided pack trips in the Park. Ace was influenced by artist Charlie Russell, who had a cabin on Lake McDonald. Ace was a frequent visitor at the Russell cabin in the summer months.

Feb. 3, 1988

Glacier Park was considering a motorboat ban on Kintla Lake. Today, the lake does not allow any motorized craft. A mountain lion killed noted wolf researcher Diane Boyd’s dog — not a wolf as previously reported. Boyd told the newspaper that an earlier story was simply wrong. She let the dog outside her cabin up the North Fork on Jan. 5 and the dog’s body was surrounded by lion tracks about 400 yards from the cabin. The dog was killed nearly instantly by one bite, an autopsy later found.

20 years ago

Jan. 29, 1998

Columbia Falls snowmobiler JyDee Ren was killed in avalanche while riding near Inspiration Pass in the Swan Range. A cornice broke loose from above and buried him. It took fellow snowmobilers about an hour to find him and dig him out. Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. salaried staff were to split about $25 million in a profit-sharing settlement with the company. That amount was after attorney fees and court costs.

Jan. 31, 2008

The Columbia Falls speech and debate team won its third straight state A title. Columbia Falls put 13 students in the finals. Tanner Trottier of Columbia Falls rolled a 290 in bowling.
