Free meal

Everyone is welcome to attend the free Canyon Community dinner held at the Hungry Horse School on the last Thursday of the month. This month, it is Jan. 25 and the menu is pork loin, scalloped potatoes, sauerkraut, salad, rolls and ice cream for dessert served between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. This month, we have our care store, featuring winter wear to give away. Folks can come early and have a cup of coffee and see the selection of hats, mittens, coats, sweaters and boots etc. Any questions, feel free to call Flo at 250-3406 or Luann at 261-1083.

Basin meets

The Flathead Basin Commission will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. The meeting begins at 10 a.m.

FEC calls

As part of Flathead Electric Co-op’s ongoing effort to best meet the needs of its members, they are participating in a national survey on how different generations and segments of electric cooperative members interact with and view their electric provider. Surveys of Flathead Electric members will be conducted by Bellomy Research via phone and email with a sample of co-op members from various age groups. If selected to participate, you will be asked to provide your age. The survey is expected to last no more than 12 minutes.

Calls will be made primarily during weeknights from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with weekend calling limited to Saturday only (no calls on Sundays or holidays) from February to March.

Vegeterian dinner

Whole Living Community Center is open Wednesdays 12-6 p.m. and is located 715 Nucleus Ave, lower level. Free vegetarian lunch served each week, Free “Dinner with a Doctor” Monday Jan. 29, 5-7 p.m. Vegetarian dinner will be served and podiatrist, Dr. Robert Clase will share about diabetes and foot care. Speaker series

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Association will have its annual speaker series at FVCC. Lectures will be held teh first Wednesday monthly, February through April, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Feb 7: “Wild and Scenic Rivers, the 50th Anniversary,” speakers Colter Pence of the Forest Service and author John Fraley, Author and Adjunct Instructor FVCC on Wildlife Conservation will talk about the inspiration for the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act took place in the upper Middle Fork of the Flathead River in what is now the Great Bear Wilderness Area, part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of this important legislation, Colter and John will give a team presentation describing the history and present day management of the three forks of the Flathead.

Wednesday, March 7: “The Untrammeled Observatory. Lessons from Wilderness Fire,” speaker Andrew J Larson, Associate Professor of Forest Ecology, Department of Forest Management, University of Montana will present results from several years of fire and forest ecology field research in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Topics include the scientific and educational value of wilderness, the fire ecology of the Northern Rockies forests, and the importance of wilderness areas as a source of information to help society sustainably manage non-wilderness lands.

April 4: “The Recovery of Grizzly Bears in Montana,” speaker Rick Mace, retired wildlife biologist with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks will talk about the road to recovery of these large mammals and what it means to have them removed from the Endangered Species Act.
