Day of mourning for Bush means late delivery of newspaper; Bush visited Glacier in 1983
Our apologies to print subscribers as they will receive their newspaper a day late this week. The Post Office is closed Wednesday as part of the day of mourning for former President George H.W, Bush. Other federal offices are closed as well, including the Forest Service.
President Bush died Nov. 30 at the age of 94.
Bush visited Glacier National Park in August 1983 to much fanfare when he was vice president under Ronald Reagan. The affable Bush and his wife, Barbara camped two nights in Loop āDā in Apgar in a four-man tent.
Their vacation lasted all of 36 hours in the Park.
He fished in Hidden Lake with Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming. Bush caught a small trout on a spinning rod, Simpson caught three fish on a fly rod.
The pair, along with a host of Secret Service agents and Park rangers, spent two hours at the lake ā an hour longer than they were supposed to.
Bush also canoed down lower McDonald Creek and they had a barbecue in the horse pasture adjacent to the creek.
The Coleman company donated the tent to Glacier Park the Bushes stayed in at Apgar. Bush signed the tent.
Barbara Bush and escort Sally Thompson of West Glacier went to church together Sunday morning.
