Bird stroll

Join Flathead Audubon and retired Biology Professor Jeanette Oliver 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 for an information-packed stroll in the portion of the Owen Sowerine Natural Area on Leisure Island. The trip will include an easy walk across a mostly dry portion of the Stillwater River to explore the OSNA’s Big Island that is usually accessible only by boat. The group will identify flood plain vegetation and spot birds along the way. Contact Jeanette at jopoliver74@gmail.com or 755-8622 for details. The trip is limited to 20 participants and is co-sponsored with Montana Audubon. The trip is free and open to the public.

Bat outing

Join Flathead Audubon on Friday, Aug. 10, 2018 from 8:30 pm until 11 p.m. for a cooperative field trip with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to go to a site with known bat activity. Wildlife biologists Lewis Young, Lisa Bate and Chris Hammond will demonstrate the equipment, handle bats captured in the mist nets and talk about the amazing adaptations bats have for navigating, catching food and hibernating. Frog talk

Amazing ecological engineers, beavers have the ability to build wetlands and shape new ecosystems. But how might these ecological changes to the landscape affect amphibians and their parasites? Join Glacier National Park Conservancy Fellow Leah Joyce as she discusses her time this summer studying the frogs and toads that call Glacier home and how their associated chytrid fungus and nematode infections are changing due to those busy beavers. Talk is Aug. 9 at noon at the Community Building in Glacier National Park.
