Forest looks to move Polebridge boat ramp

The Flathead National Forest is proposing a new boat launch ramp on the North Fork of the Flathead near Polebridge. The current boat launch has problems for floaters because the river dynamics have changed over time — an eddy that once allowed a safe stop is now gone.

As a result, floaters typically miss the boat ramp entirely and have to float downstream to a spot below the bridge to take out, explained M.J. Crandall, district recreation lead.

To rectify the problem the Hungry Horse-Glacier View Ranger District is proposing moving the boat and ramp and the pit toilet to a site about 150 yards downstream, where the banks are more stable and the current is less challenging. The old site, which is north of the bridge, would remain for parking, Crandall explained.

Work could start this spring, and overall, the improvements would take three years.

The changes are in compliance with the Forest’s land and resource management plan and the Wild and Scenic river management plan, the Forest maintains.
